So I have a 2000 Audi TT 180FWD. I hopped in my car last night and when I turned the key to start it....Click...something broke in the ignition switch or tumbler (i know nothing about ignitions) all i know is it does not catch, it does not start, the key spins 360 degrees and I cant get the key out of the friggin car. Anyone else have this issue before?? Is their a simple DIY for this or should I have it towed to a dealer (i don't want to do that) I've seen DIY ignition switch and something about ignition tumbler but Im not sure if thats what I need....And I don't understand how i could just swap that out since I would think each switch is specific to the key.... Thanks for any help anyone can give!!

That is a trip to the dealer, as they will need to install a new barrel, and code everything up. I know its not cheap, but its the only way

It never hurts to call a locksmith. All they can say is "no". I am with you on the trips to the dealer. I think they have a $1000 minimum charge and the mechanics are paid like neurosurgeons.

I use other sources as available. I had my top replaced by a local man for 25-30% of the dealers cost, and it was a much higher quality top.

The dealer said that to get a new key for my car was $350. I don't think I need one that bad.

I got the car for a great price, but have to empty the cookie jar everytime I go to the dealer.

Example, rear brakes at Audi- $800, front brakes at Midas-$420.
